About Ben

Ben is a man of many interests and hobbies. He is a proud owner of a natural, grass-fed angus beef cattle farm in Kentucky. In addition to that, he has been coaching high school boys U19 rugby team for a decade. Ben is also a private pilot, certified for VFR. When he is not flying, he enjoys playing squash, golf, and riding motorcycles. Ben is also passionate about investing and charitable giving.

SigmaTEK is a premium nesting CAD/CAM software company offering a complete ecosystem for professional fabricators with 350 people operating through 17 entities globally  

  • Founder.  Established SigmaTEK in Bellevue, WA in April 1993, leveraging the discovery of an efficient shape nesting algorithm developed at Mecad Systems (South African sister company).  Drove the complete entrepreneurial process, establishing SigmaNEST as a product and introducing it to the US market.

  • Strategist.  My favorite role.  Developed a complete corporate playbook for an international software company going from purpose, mission and core focus to vision clarity, core values, SWOT, Make-or-Break, service value chain, accountability, results orientation and forward looking KPI dashboard.

  • Team builder.  My most challenging role.  Supervised talent acquisition and retention strategy, adoption of catalytic coaching-based performance management, owned establishment of clarity around organization’s purpose, vision and aspirations, directed global internal training events, supervised development of internal guidelines and policies, designed variable compensation structures for sales management.

  • Dealmaker.  This came naturally. Conducted a deep, ongoing study of controlling and closing the deal, throughout.  Distilled a unique sales vocabulary, approach, funnel structure and sales forecasting system.  Leveraged win reports, loss reports and voice of the customer.  Promoted superior quality and service over price as business philosophy.  Identified, structured and consummated all manner of deals during my tenure as CEO including game changing corporate contracts to numerous acquisitions, culminating in divestiture in 2018.

  • Leader of innovation.  My creative outlet.  My whole career involved the development and utilization of CAD/CAM software.  With engineering curiosity as a personal core value, maintained a keen interest in trends, gaps, opportunities and problems, and directed the CTO and development team accordingly.  Established agile development collaboration system through 4 R&D locations: Cincinnati, Seattle, Pune (India) and Coventry (UK).

  • International entrepreneur.  Strong international business inclination. Drove geographic diversification.  Affinity for navigating the dynamics of foreign business cultures (Japan, Korea, Germany, China, India).  Supervised the creation and/or acquisition and integration of legal operating entities in 15 countries.

  • Leadership team development.  Cultivated the art of persuading others to want to struggle for a common aspiration.   Promoted leadership best practices through literature (7 Habits, 5 Dysfunctions, 5 Levels of leadership, Above the line, etc.) and the intentional organizational rhythm of leadership meetings and off-sites, achieving engagement and results orientation.

  • Marketing leader.  Owned marketing strategy and branding initially and ran marketing department for more than 12 years.  Supervised marketing director subsequently, guiding marketing budget, segmentation, traction channels, tactical marketing plan, campaigns, price positioning, distribution, market research, competitive analysis and drove global adoption.

  • Global compliance and governance.  Chaired the successful selection and implementation of a corporate wide ERP system (Oracle NetSuite) covering key workflows including campaign to ROI (with marketing automation integration), CRM, quote to cash, case to resolution, transfer pricing, legacy data migration and legacy system integration (12-month process, went live Oct 2016).  Supervised global tax strategy.

  • Founder.  Established Mecad in April 1987 in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa as value added software reseller for EMRC, Troy, MI, and CNC Software, Tolland, CT.

  • Chief executive and General Manager. Managed all aspects of the business from marketing and sales to organizational development, talent acquisition, finance, operations and product development.  Owned partner relations.

  • Structural analysis software product manager. Managed the NISA FEA product including marketing, sales, technical support, training and liaison with principle.  Built and developed team of engineering consultants.

  • Lead structural analysis consultant.  Focused on fracture mechanics, thermal stress analysis, vibration and fatigue, offering design and analysis services.  Projects included crane design, large capacity industrial fans and projects in defense industry.

  • Chief Technical Officer (CTO). Identified technology gaps in the field of manufacturing CAD/CAM.  Architected and drove resulting application software development.  Developed a shape nesting algorithm based on 2D bar sorting approach and supervised its implementation. Supervised 5 axis post processor development and CNC programming of complex aerospace components.

Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Northwest University enthusiastically embraced the role of computers in engineering, pioneering the adoption of technology in engineering teaching in South Africa in the eighties.

  • Curriculum design, undergraduate. Developed course content, structure, method of delivery and tests for verification of desired outcomes for undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering including Mechanics of Machines 200 and 300, Turbo-machines 400 and Mechanical design 200, 300 and 400.

  • Curriculum design, graduate. Developed complete master’s level courses in the technical and management aspects of computer aided design and manufacturing including computational geometry, topology and modeling, and the best practices of CAD/CAM in industry.

  • Researcher.  Research work included computational fluid flow analysis and the numeric solution of the Navier-Stokes equation.  Joined Engineering Mechanics Research Corp of Troy, MI for one-year sabbatical working in FEA applications in aerospace and automotive (1987).

  • Senior Lecturer. Taught undergraduate and graduate level engineering classes full time for 6 years.

Megkon Inc was partnership of a group of professional engineers offering consulting engineering services in the mining and high technology fields.

  • Mechanical Design Engineer. Leveraging my status as Professional Engineer (PE) I designed or redesigned numerous products including truck mounted mobile cranes, bucket trucks, mining machinery and equipment, pressure vessels, chemical plant components and structures.

  • Structural Analysis Consultant. Using finite element analysis (FEA), conducted a large variety of consulting projects covering dynamics and vibration, heat transfer and thermal stress, fatigue and fracture mechanics, modal analysis, buckling and non-linear statics.

  • Systems Engineer. Consulted in the field of systems engineering specifically availability analysis.  Developed simulation software to model failure mode, effect and criticality analysis (FMECA) in mechanized gold mining, facilitating equipment redesign and optimization.

  • Expert witness in injury lawsuits.

  • Board member for Subsidiary group of companies (Ingtek 2000). Board consisted of 9 members overseeing executive management team.

Intamarket represented Gerber Systems CAD/CAM systems, maker of software, cutters and plotters for the manufacturing industry

  • Mechanical CAD/CAM Applications Engineer. Managed the technical support function for the company including training, installation and customer service for the software.

  • Sales support.  Conducted benchmarks, demonstrations and customer presentations, developing a compelling demo procedure and participating in numerous successful projects.

  • Structural Analysis Consulting.  Conducted finite element stress and vibration analysis studies in a variety of applications and problems.

  • CNC programming. 3 and 5 axis CNC programming for complex aerospace parts and plastic injection molds, including G-code, program verification and first item production supervision.

  • Traveled to the US and Europe frequently keeping up with the latest 3D CAD/CAM trends, applications and technology.

Mechanical Design Engineer

Sandock-Austral (BAE Systems)

Sandock-Austral was a defense contractor developing state of the art armored vehicles

  • Drive-train design engineer.  Led several transmission and gearbox design projects for weight reduction and durability improvement involving hypoid, helical and double helical gears, and bearings.

  • Design software developer.  Designed and developed a 3D wireframe modeling application to optimize armor plate weld preps for military vehicle hull fabrication.

  • Project Manager. Conducted a technical and economic feasibility study for the implementation of a commercial 3D CAD/CAM system, culminating in the acquisition a comprehensive ComputerVision solution.

  • Technical lead. Developed requirement specification, sourced, evaluated and selected 3 and 5 axis horizontal CNC machining centers for Gear Ratio.
